Franz Josef parts 1 and 2

Jen and Bobby are booked in for another go at a sky dive – this time over the alps.  We’ve got a hike on the glacier itself  planned, with a helicopter ride to the glacier.
(Carole played with this photo on her iPhone!)

Today Carole and I walked up to some tunnels that were dug during the gold rush years here – about 1870ish.  The tunnels had ankle deep water running through them – straight off the glacier and bloody cold too but we went into the tunnels to see glow-worms – little LEDs stuck to the ceiling. Great stuff – shame we came see them back in Witherslack!

The high winds and low cloud also cancelled Jen and Bobby’s skydive for a second time.

Franz Josef 2
Carole concentrating on taking the picture!

Today we had the trip of a lifetime – a helicopter ride around the area and then up onto the Franz Josef  glacier for three hours hiking – scrambling really, up and around the main ice fall before flying back down to Franz Josef.  Trip of a lifetime, always wanted to climb a glacier and it lived up to expectations.  The scale and majesty of the place is just phenomenal.

This is the sort of place you have to see, pictures are just not good enough.

The blocks of ice you can see behind us are as big as houses and cars.

To add to the excitement the weather started closing in and the guides were worried about whether or not the helicopters could get up to pick us up.

Lead to a low level ride home – these helicopters really can fly close to the mountainsides!

The grey bit this side of Franz Josef  is the extent of the winter river bed, at the moment - their summer - the river is about the same size as the River Kent in the middle of Kendal. Must be amazing when the river is in spate.

Both of us came back on a real high, absolutely wonderful.

Bob and Jan's tenner came too!

Bobby and Jen’s skydive was cancelled yet again – a real disappointment, the weather forecast for tomorrow is not good either.  They went dirt buggy riding instead but thats just not enough of an adrenalin rush for them!
