Festival of Bonfires in Alicante, Lyon and the Women's World Cup 2019

We flew out on the 17th of June, arriving there in time for the most bonkers bonfire and firework festival ever..  Each Barrio in the city built an ironic/satirical statue which in then judged and the best is placed on a floating barge and moored in the middle of the harbour.  At midnight on the 22nd the statues are set fire to! Totally bizarre.

This is followed by a week long fireworks competition starting again at midnight on the city beach.  These are the best fireworks I've ever seen.  Each region sends a team and no expensive seems to be spared.  Totally amazing, sat on the beach watching the explosions and feeling the ground vibrate along with your chest.

Some of the statues are huge, this one filled the main town hall square.

Any excuse for a street party, lots of streets were closed off for private parties but also public ones too.

The winner was set alight in the main harbour, a few hundred metres from our berth.

The thick black smoke covered the city.

Fire boat spraying the smoke to keep it down a little.

New Genoa - better than any fireworks - says Dave!!!

Look at the water temperature, and its not really summer yet!

Fabulous fireworks every night for a week.

After the fireworks we caught the train to Lyon, stopping over in Barcelona, to watch the Women's World Cup Semi Final.  Educated guessing meant that we'd picked the right tickets and got to see England against the USA.  The crowds were fantastic, the American fans outnumbering the Brits 15:1 which is incredible considering the distance the Americans had to travel.  Sadly we lost, just outplayed but a great game all the same.  We were interview by a reporter from The Times! We had 4 days in Lyon so got to have a good look around, commuting on electric hire scooters.

Lyon claims to be the gastronomic heartland go France and the food across the city was really good but when you're used to Spanish prices, paying was a bit of a shock!

 Just arrived at Alicante station

Folded and ready to go on the train.

We're used to paying less than half of this in Spain!

Really? In Lyon?

Stade de Lyon, where the Lyon mens and women football teams play, 54,000 capacity and it was full.

Great seats just above the BBC commentary box.

Lyon was the setting off point for a cycling tour on our folding Bromptons.  The aim - to cycle down to the Med.

Ready for the off.
