We pottered about the city for the last few days, seen the
sights and used the free bus and tram system to get about. The normal trams run across the city but the
city also puts on a free service for
tourists that goes to most of the main sites, it was full of Aussies though!
Managed to catch the men’s final at the Aussie Wildcard
competition for the January 2012 Australian Open.
The tennis was great, sat and watched some great tennis at
one of the world’s biggest tennis set ups, the Rod Laver Centre. A chap called Melosovic won the final,
beating another Aussie called Duckworth, 3 sets to love, not as much as a
walkover as its sounds.
The Melbourne museum took up most of the day, well worth it,
if only to explain a bit about the Aboriginal culture and the issues between
the Aussies and the Aboriginals. Over
the years the Aboriginals have suffered a lot and been displaced from large
areas of land, latterly amends are being made but there appears to be a lot of
conflicting thoughts going on in the Aussie psychie which I haven’t got my head around as yet.
Jen and Bobbie took us out for a great meal last night;
great tapas, great wine, great company.
The thing you notice about the restaurants around here is
that there are lots of them, just about every wave of immigrants has set up
their own speciality restaurants, and they are all good. The coffee in the city is something of an
institution, every café serves seriously good caffeine.
Picking a hire car up tomorrow, to have a day out with Jen
and Bobbie, before we disappear along the Great Ocean Rd and up into the
Grampians for a while. Aussie YHAs here
we come.
